A Journey of Struggles, Loss, and Triumph: From Mr. Abilash Kasi to Dr. Abilash Kasi

Writer: Abilash KasiAbilash Kasi

They say a PhD is not just a degree but a journey filled with struggles, loss, grief, and invaluable life lessons. Today, as I officially earn the title of Dr. Abilash Kasi, PhD., C.Psych. Kasi, my heart is overwhelmed with gratitude and emotions.

This accomplishment is deeply dedicated to my amma, Late Mrs. Dhanakodeeswari Kasi. Losing her during my higher education was an unimaginable pain, but looking back, I see how her life was a testament to resilience and determination. She was not just a mother but a struggler, an achiever, and an inspiration. After my father, Late Mr. K.P. Kasi, passed away, she took on both roles—raising us, educating us, and shaping our future.

Though she was a 9th-fail student, she never let that define her. She built a career as an X-ray technician in the healthcare sector and later resumed her education alongside me. She completed her 10th, 12th, Bcom, and even MBA, proving that education is the greatest asset no one can take away from us. If she were alive today, I am sure she would have pursued a PhD too. Amma, every achievement of mine is yours.

I also extend my heartfelt gratitude to my well-wisher and guardian, Mr. Muthukrishnan, who stood by me through every challenge. A special thanks to Dr. Sindhuja Manisha Kamini P and her mother, Mrs. Parvathavarthini TKP aunty, whose unwavering support and encouragement led me to choose this PhD path.

To my friends, family, and every mentor who supported and guided me—this achievement is not just mine, but ours.

A profound thank you to my PhD supervisor, Dr. Ruchi Joshi ma’am, whose invaluable experience, guidance, and encouragement helped me navigate the toughest moments.

I also take this moment to express my sincere gratitude to Dr. M. Ravichandran, Secretary Ministry of Earth Sciences, Government of India and Prof. Dr. Gajender Kumar Aseri , Pro-Vice Chancellor’s for gracing the occasion and presenting my doctoral degree. It is truly an honor to receive this milestone achievement in your esteemed presence.

A Reflection Through Thirukkural

அகற்க இயையாதவை அஞ்சற்க அஞ்சுக

மிகற்க இயையாத மீக்கு.

(Thirukkural 67)

"Fear not what is impossible to achieve; fear only excess in what is possible."

This Kural perfectly reflects my journey—facing hardships, overcoming challenges, and never giving up on education and personal growth. My amma’s resilience and determination proved that nothing is truly impossible when pursued with dedication. This PhD is not just my achievement but a tribute to her legacy.

Today, I stand proud, not just as Dr. Abilash Kasi, PhD., C.Psych., but as a reflection of the sacrifices, struggles, and love that shaped me. Thank you all.🧑‍🎓
